  • This is a shit post

Not a shitpost, simply an acknowledgement that the first post is usually far worse than those that follow.

    Starting a new blog

I’ve had this domain registered a little while. For 4 or 5 years I’ve been meaning to start a blog. In that time, I’ve had plenty of ideas, and have even registered a domain for one of them.

I was so proud of finding a great domain. I basked in the warm glow that I was doing something constructive for myself. The days slipped by, and then the months.

After a while, the guilt of leaving it for so long started nagging at me. So I started writing a post. It’s still sat there in drafts.

    Beware the novelty effect

I’ve seen this cycle repeat several times in the last few years. A fantastic new idea about how to change life for the better springs to mind. A day or two where this new thing works fantastically. It’s usually forgotten within a week.

Last week, I committed to spending my morning doom scrolling time into something that compounds. The first 4 days were great. Day five was a Friday, so it’s natural to have a break. Then the weekend brings other challenges.

In the first 4 days, I’d setup a trello board of all the things that I can spend my new-found personal time on. I’d published two posts on a hobby site, I’d sat through the mind-numbing intro videos on trello showing me features I never intend to use. I also setup this domain, and prepared it for glory.

Today is day 11, and I’ve reclaimed some time on five mornings so far. Not bad.

    Ship something

The first two posts on my previous attempt at a blog are still sat in draft. It’s easy to tinker round the edges, and think that you need a logo, and a brand palette, and all these other superfluous gizmos before starting, lest ye be judged.

I’m breaking that pattern with this shit post.

May the next one be better!
